The Radical Right in Germany (1945–2000)

This research project is dedicated to the history of the radical right in both parts of Germany in the second half of the 20th century. The aim is to analyse its development comprehensively and with the support of archives, including previously untapped sources, in a contemporary historical context.

The focus is on the overarching question of which social practices brought about the generational change of the radical right in Germany – from the actors socialised under National Socialism to the cohorts who grew up in democracy and the SED dictatorship and who have been setting the tone since the 1970s.

This change is examined in various sub-projects using socio-historical approaches and actor-oriented perspectives. The focus is on ideological and organisational formations, cultural and everyday practices, and, last but not least, forms of violence used by the radical right and its relations with the state and society.
