Fribourg City Tour - Wednesday, 2 September 10 am

Congress participants are invited to join a guided city tour on Wednesday morning, September 2, 2026, offering an opportunity to explore Fribourg’s connections to colonial history. Participation is subject to registration and availability of places.

City tour on the colonial history of Fribourg

When people speak of colonialism, they usually mean the period from around 1500 to the second half of the 20th century. For many Swiss people, colonialism is therefore something that belongs to the past today—and, moreover, something that had nothing to do with Switzerland, since it never possessed colonies. Although Switzerland itself formally had no colonies, it was nevertheless strongly involved in the colonial projects of other European nations.
