What to do in Fribourg
Fribourg is part of the "Röstigraben", the cultural frontier between French- and German-speaking Switzerland. It offers a rich blend of history, nature, and local charm.
St. Nicholas Cathedral
Located in the heart of the Old Town, the St. Nicholas Cathedral is a must-see. You can climb its 365 steps for a panoramic view of the city and the Sarine river valley.
Take a dip in the Sarine
On warm days, head to one of the natural swimming spots along the Sarine river (a local favourite during the summer). The Motta swimming pool is also a scenic option.
Fribourg funicular
Take a ride on the Fribourg funicular, a unique piece of living heritage. Built in 1899 and powered by recycled wastewater, it connects the upper city (near the university) with the Basse-Ville (Lower Town). It's one of the last funiculars of its kind in the world.
Old Town and bridges
Fribourg’s Old Town is full of medieval architecture, narrow alleys, and picturesque bridges. Don’t miss the Bern Bridge, the Zaehringen Bridge, and the St-Jean Bridge for a scenic walk.
Art and culture
The city hosts several museums and galleries. Highlights include:
- Musée d’art et d’histoire (MAHF) (current exhibition: Chiharu Shiota - In the Light)
- Espace Jean Tinguely – Niki de Saint Phalle
- Kunsthalle Friart Fribourg
- Swiss Museum and Center for Electronic Music Instruments (SMEM), one of the world’s most extensive collections of synthesizers and drum machines
Local specialties
Try "fondue moitié-moitié", "jambon de la Borne", meringues with La Gruyère double cream, cuchaule with Bénichon mustard, or a local craft beer on a terrace in the Old Town.
