Getting to and around Fribourg
By plane
Fribourg is easily accessible from three major international airports in Switzerland: Geneva, Zurich, and Basel.
- Geneva Airport (approx. 1h30)
There is a direct train line from Geneva Airport (Genève-Aéroport) to Fribourg, making this a convenient option. The journey takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
If you're travelling via Geneva by train, grab a seat by the window on the right-hand side in the direction of travel—the ride along Lake Geneva and through the Lavaux vineyards (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) offers especially scenic views.
- Zurich Airport (approx. 1h45)
From Zurich Airport, you can take either a direct train to Fribourg or a connection with a quick transfer in Zurich main station or Bern. Total travel time is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
- Basel Airport (approx. 2h00)
From Basel EuroAirport, take a bus to Basel SBB train station, then a train to Bern, followed by a connecting train to Fribourg. The overall journey takes around 2 hours.
By train
In Switzerland, seat reservations are usually not required, and most tickets are valid for any departure on the selected date. For certain trains, you may find discounted “supersaver tickets” that are valid only for specific connections.
You can buy tickets at the station, but we recommend using the SBB Mobile app or the SBB website for real-time schedules and easy ticket purchases for all public transport in Switzerland.
Fribourg
Fribourg is a walkable city, with most locations easily reached on foot.
For longer distances or trips to nearby towns, you can use the Transports publics fribourgeois (TPF) bus network. Tickets are available at bus stops or via the SBB Mobile app.
