Keynote Speakers
Keynote 1
Prof. Julien Louis (Liverpool John Moores University)
From science to podium: insight into professional cycling and football
As a scientist-practitioner working both in academia and in the field, Julien will provide an insight into his work to improve elite sport performance through adapted nutrition. The focus will be on endurance cycling and football, two very different sports requiring different nutritional recommendations. Julien will explain his work to understand the physiological demands of both sports in order to prepare individualised recommendations for athletes. Examples from the last Tour de France, Premier League and Ligue 1 football clubs will be presented. Julien will also explain how the results from his research are translated into practical solutions in the field and vice-versa or how questions from the field inform his research agenda. A focus will be made on carbohydrate periodisation strategies designed to upregulate the adaptation to training for better performances.
Keynote 2
Prof. Dr. Karsten Köhler (TUM School of Medicine and Health, TUM School of Life Science)
Nutrition & Exercise: Two Sides of the Same Coin ?
Overweight and obesity are considered one of the major health challenges of the 21st century. By 2035, it is expected that one in two people worldwide will be overweight and one in four will be obese.
Although there is no consensus in the scientific literature on causes and risk factors for this global pandemic, the impact of poor nutrition and physical inactivity is undisputed. This is supported by the fact that most individuals fail to meet the dietary and physical activity recommendations. However, how much these two lifestyle factors contribute to the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity is often misjudged.
The aim of the lecture is to critically discuss the role of nutrition and physical activity in the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity. A distinction is made between the induction of weight loss, where dietary interventions are significantly more effective, and long-term weight management, where physical activity plays a more important role. The interactions between the two factors, such as how exercise impact eating behavior, will also be discussed.
